The gas giant Jupiter loomed on the viewscreen, its great red eye staring into the void. Captain Elena Vasquez guided her squadron of F-42 Starhawks through the radiation belts, their shields straining, their sensors blinded.

"Command, this is Ghost Lead. We're in position. No sign of the enemy."

"Copy, Ghost Lead. Proceed with the operation. Good hunting."

The operation was simple-use Jupiter's magnetic field to conceal their approach, then ambush the alien fleet gathering in its shadow. Three scouts had been destroyed. Now the main force was coming.

"There," Lieutenant Marcus Webb said. "Bearing two-two-zero. Multiple contacts."

Elena saw them-dozens of ships, organic and pulsing, moving in formation.

"All fighters, engage."

The Starhawks dove from Jupiter's shadow, their missiles streaking toward the alien fleet. The void lit up with explosions, the enemy ships scattering.

But they were fast. Too fast.

"Break left!" Elena shouted.

Marcus rolled, dodging a beam of purple energy. Elena fired, her cannons tearing through an alien fighter.

"We're surrounded," Marcus said.

Elena looked at her displays. The enemy had anticipated their ambush. They were the ones being hunted.

"Pull back," she ordered. "Regroup at the rally point."

The squadron turned, burning hard for the safety of Jupiter's shadow. Behind them, the alien fleet gave chase.

"They're gaining," Marcus said.

Elena made a decision. "Marcus, take the squadron home. I'll cover you."

"Elena-"

"That's an order."

She turned her Starhawk, firing into the pursuing fleet. Her missiles found targets, her cannons cut through alien hulls. But they kept coming.

"Go!" she shouted.

The squadron disappeared into Jupiter's shadow. Elena flew on, alone, her ship damaged, her ammunition low.

"Command, this is Ghost Lead. I'm hit. Ejecting."

The cockpit exploded around her. She closed her eyes and pulled the ejection lever.

When she woke, she was floating in the void, her survival suit keeping her alive.

"Elena, this is Marcus. We're coming for you."

She looked at the alien fleet, still searching for her. "No. You can't. They'll see you."

"We're not leaving you behind."

Elena smiled, despite everything. "Then hurry."

She watched the stars, waiting. And somewhere in the darkness, her squadron was coming home.
